The only bad thing about this idea of going to the beach for my birthday (besides the part where I say to my parents, "I'd like a cheap motel room somewhere near the national seashore at Hatteras for my birthday. You can come too, if you want") is that my preorder of A Wizard of Mars will not have come yet, owing to the book's Official Release Date being the 14th.

Books and the sea- what could be better?

I'm trying to remember the Stardust quote about lovers being madmen and poets, but I can't recall it properly, and I can't look it up because someone *ahemgwen* still has my copy of Stardust.

Oh dear. My crafty spirit is returning right in time for school to start.
I've been struck by the urge to do some cross stitch sayings from The Quotable Star Wars, or perhaps some Babylon 5. The Babylon 5 Mantra seems singularly appropriate as subject matter for a sampler.

Yes, this seems like an excellent idea. Now all I have to figure out is how to do it.

ohgod. WHY CAN PEOPLE NOT SPELL?!

"Hear" is not the same as "here", "vile" is not the same as "vial". I just want to reach out and shake the internet and scream that HOMONYMS ARE NOT THE SAME AS SYNONYMS. And then, of course, I would have to pull out a dictionary and explain it all over again using very simple words. Also, proper capitalization and punctuation are VERY IMPORTANT.

I'm just going to go rock in a corner now.

ps--"ohgod" is an intentional elision of the two words, since whenever I feel this way they always come out as one when spoken.

I need to decide what to knit. On the one hand, I have a shawl to finish (the Wool Peddler's Shawl in Caron Simply Soft, because I am a weenie and wanted to do it in something cheap). I first cast on for this thing my freshman year of college. Since then it's been ripped out and restarted a few times because of things like missing and increase in the 28th row and not noticing until the 54th, or the whole damn thing coming off the needles because I forgot to secure them. Now, at long last, I'm in the lace section, and I'm starting to think it may be safe to dream about finishing it before I die.

On the other hand, I need a new hat, and I have a skein of Malabrigo in Azul Profundo bought specifically for the purpose around this time last year. I've finally even found a free pattern that I really like-- the Sutro Heights hat. The only problem is that it requires reading a chart. I do not read charts. I knit my lace from written instructions.

Maybe winter break is a good time to learn charts? The recent snow and cold have made me really crave a nice warm hat that doesn't make my forehead itch.

Also, I seriously love my B5 icons. I want to hug them and squeeze them and love them forever and set one as my default. Just as soon as I can pick. They also make me want to plug in my VCR and watch season 3, arguably my favorite, even though I don't have it on DVD. Cheap-ass me will not buy the box sets, because they are expensive, so I have to wait and ask for them for birthdays. Luckily season 3 is pretty complete--when we taped season 2 we somehow missed a few episodes, including Soul Mates, which I loved beyond measure.

That reminds me--I am RIDICULOUSLY embarrassed that I have seen Soul Mates so many times since I got season 2 on dvd and STILL managed to misattribute Matt Stoner's line to Bester. In my defense, they are both bastards and they both belong to the Psi Corps. Also in my defense, I'm usually preoccupied with the other storylines and Timov's general awesomeness (see icon).

The knitting geek in me thinks that it would be really neat to slip a little "k2tog" into a wedding somewhere. Is this even dorkier than I think it is?

I love Slings and Arrows not with a fiery passion, but with a deep abiding love. It has catchy music (see the awesome opening song for each season), wonderful acting (see the whole freaking cast, but especially Paul Gross as Geoffrey Tennant), and more great dialogue than you can shake a stick at (and more than I can list in parentheses).

If you have not heard of Slings and Arrows, please accept my heartiest recommendation that you view it at your earliest convenience. It's three seasons of 6 episodes apiece, and it's an absolute delight. There are madmen and lovers and ghosts and villains and charmingly cynical old gay men. It is, in some ways, a love song to the theater--not only to the good, the times when everything is flying, but to the banal and the times when everything comes crashing down. And, of course, it is a love song to everything Shakespeare can be, when done properly and directed by a madman.

Why isn't anybody showing the Muppet Christmas Carol? I feel gypped. It's not really Christmas without Muppets. Also, I long for the Island of Misfit Toys. Clearly, once classes are over Blockbuster and I are going to have a brief but torrid affair.

Tonight I'm playing a game I like to call "Sara can stay alert on codeine, but will the triazolam knock her out?"
I'm actually taking the triazolam as a muscle relaxant, in the hope that I'll be able to look to the left without undue pain come the weekend, but if it put me to sleep too, that would be great. Last night's sleep hardly even merits the term--I spent at least as much time awake or half-awake as I did actually asleep, and I must have woken up a dozen times.

Also- I have so many cool new B5 icons that I am absolutely spoiled for choice. I have decided to save the ones that crack me up every time I see them for later. Delenn and Ivanova get to take the first spot in this rotation. When I was younger and just watching B5 for the first time, I decided that I wanted to be like Delenn AND Ivanova. Surprisingly, I think I've actually succeeded in that goal to some degree--they're both strong, smart, determined women, and I think that's what I'm growing towards.

Aaaand the triazolam is winning. Time for sleep, here's hoping it lasts.

And speaking of Andrew Lee Potts-
THERE WILL BE MORE PRIMEVAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In 2011, but OMG. I can wait. Srsly. Hope they'll be keeping the same cast--they're absolutely perfect as is. Plus that would mean more adorkable Connor/Abby from Andrew Lee Potts and Hannah Spearritt.

I am so, so glad that ITV rescinded their stupidity. (Look--even the Doctor and Rose are happy! Mostly because I don't have any Primeval icons to use.)

Just read 602 reviews of Dorian and tallied up the number which were positive.

I just read 602 reviews of Dorian all the way through.

Argh. Sleep now. Tomorrow I will be reading 750 reviews of Snake Oil and doing exactly the same thing. Then I get to turn it all into math.

I think this whole year of specials idea for Doctor Who has been a terrible one, especially with the weird spacing.
Why?
Because I, an avid (one might even say rabid) fan of the new series, am having a hard time remembering to watch the newest special, despite the fact that half of my lj icons are Who-related, my desktop is covered in Tennant, and my external is called the TARDIS. It probably has something to do with the fact that the last special aired in April, and I have had time in the interval to do things like watch all of Eureka and NCIS. If Gwen hadn't been reminding me periodically about the upcoming 11th Doctor, I would have forgotten that the 10th still has some screen time left in him. I understand they didn't want to leave an empty year while DT was off having a career outside the show and all, but the way they've chosen to resolve that problem leaves a lot to be desired. The Waters of Mars should have aired months ago, while I was still waiting with bated breath (and lots of free time). If it's kind of a cliffhanger for the 2 part Christmas special, so what? That would have kept up my enthusiasm for them. As it is… Waters of Mars. Eh. Maybe I'll see it before the other two have both aired.

holyshittheukrepodvdreleaseisonsalefor8bucks.
even with shipping, that is awesome, and totally justifies asking for a new dvd player for christmas instead of the US dvd.
the uk dvd release, by the way, has all the commentaries, all the featurettes, and the deleted scenes. and a sing-along version.
the us release has two out of the four commentaries, two of the four featurettes, and nothing else. even the blu-ray release isn't as inclusive as the uk dvd, and blu-ray players are ridiculously expensive.

Have finished cleaning, had near-boiling shower (with lots of soap), sweet omelette for dinner w/ Lord Peter Wimsey. Decided in favor of several good stiff glasses of milk, rather than fancy girly drink. Now, bed. too sleepy/lazy to make nice hot cup of tea.

Also- if I ever get married and blog about my husband, I think his blog codename will be Lord Peter.

Ugh. What a day. Just got back from two hours at the emergency vet with Thriii because… well, it's a long, gross story involving me and cleaning up a lot of cat shit. She's fine. Let's leave it at that.
Anyway, because of that lovely little adventure this evening, I just got home, and I haven't had any dinner yet. And there's still more shit to clean up before I can take a shower and have dinner. In that order. With lots of soap. I'm not actually dirty, it's just one of my little quirks--I shudder to think what changing diapers will be like.

The good news is that my most recent BPAL order is shipping earlier than I expected. This has brightened my evening somewhat, although not as much as a dinner of scrambled eggs and a chocolate peppermintini (my mother bought this stuff. seriously.) while watching Gaudy Night for the 100,000th time will. After a long, hot, shower with lots and lots of soap. Did I mention lots of soap? And hot water?

And maybe a cup of tea to finish off the night.

Argh.

Well, tomorrow I'll go to the farmer's market and buy lovely beeswax candles and honey. And probably blueberry bread and chocolates from Dolly Mama, if we're going for honesty here.

Douglas Adams is dead.

I feel the need to point this out, since I noticed in the bookstore today (Gothic Charm Schooland Don't Panic) that Eoin Colfer has written a 6th book in the HHGTTG trilogy.

This, to me, feels like heresy and rampant commercialism. I mean, if they really wanted someone to write another HHGTTG novel, I feel like they should have picked someone who had a more similar voice and style of writing. I picked up And Another Thing…, as it's titled, and read the first few pages, and it just doesn't strike that same chord as the Adams books.

It's possible that if enough people have really positive things to say about it I'll give it another try, but that really doesn't seem very likely to me.

Speaking of television shows, I finally watched the last episode of Warehouse 13.

I hated it.

It's really unfortunate, because I really enjoyed the rest of the show. It was, like so many other things I enjoy watching, light and amusing but still satisfying. Not necessarily television for the ages, but fun. But then in the last episode they had to go *spoiler* and *spoiler* and I really hated the part where *spoiler* turned out to be *spoilerspoilerSPOILER*. Seriously, I hated these spoilery things too much to even dignify them with true inclusion into this entry. All they get are little placeholder tags. If you've seen the episode, I'm pretty sure you can fill in the blanks.

But basically, for the last episode they just completely screwed the pooch.

Things I like:

-Waking up under a nice warm pile of blankets. If they don't have perceptible weight, you're not doing it right.

-Sleeping in because a teacher has a week-long workshop and cancelled classes for the week before Fall break.

-Having time for leisure reading AND sleeping in because the only class of the day was cancelled.

Also, I've been catching up on NCIS over the past few weeks and, because of course I always find something to passionately 'ship, I am turning into a serious Tony/Ziba shipper. The only exception to the 'shipping rule right now seems to be Dollhouse, which is just too fucked up for me to 'ship anyone. Instead, I just love Topher, which is probably more appropriate anyway, given his total lack of social skills.
