Gatto has one broken toe. On his back foot.

It's splinted, he's got a pain patch, and he'll be fine, although it may be the most expensive toe ever.

The problem is that we're supposed to keep him in for 8 weeks. All I can say is this: oh dear god save us please. And please don't let him hate us when he can finally go out again.

The weather is warm, this ticks are here. Cats already bringing in ticks who promptly jump ship and go in search of a human. How do we know? Just pulled a little baby tick off my arm.

Ick. Ickickickickick. I really hate the little eight-legged bloodsuckers. Now to change all my sheets, since Luna spent all that time today sleeping on my bed.

Oh, livejournal. How I wish I could talk about Lost here. But I can't, because people who don't watch it are probably sick of hearing about it, and people who do watch it may not have seen the most recent episode and I really don't want to give spoilers.

So instead I will merely say that with every passing episode, I love Ben Linus more.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I love how you pretty much just look at Thriii and she'll start purring. Then you pet her, and the purring amps up to 11. It's adorable.

Had a lovely day of lazing. Made rice pudding, sat outside with the cats, read Blackout. I'm about 170 pages in out of 491, and I would be farther along than that if it hadn't turned out that this book follows about 6 different people in different times and places (so far) and thus requires rather careful reading so as to not get confused. I'm loving this idea of there being too many historians time traveling to the 40s to observe WWII. It totally makes sense to me--if there were time travel, I think this is exactly what historians would be doing. Not all in WWII Britain, of course, but seeing what happened first hand, without having to question the reliability of your source documents or deal with someone else's bias. And arguing over who gets to go to the really juicy bits first/at all. I will try to remember to give a fuller review after I've finished the book, but for now suffice it to say that I'm enjoying it.

Terrifying 6 o'clock traffic around Southpoint successfully navigated, book successfully acquired. My plans for tomorrow are as follows:

1) Laze in bed reading book until 11 am. Or later, if I don't wake up until 11.
2) Laze in the lovely sunlight.
3) Find someone to go to dinner with?

3 was going to be go watch Futurama with Chris, but it turns out that this week he has Friday off instead of Tuesday. Commence planshuffle, etc.

In other news, found the first tick of the season in Thriii's ear. She is unhappy about the tick, unhappy about our attempts to get a better look at it, and very unhappy indeed about the Frontline we put on her. She does not appreciate that the alternative involved one person to hold her still and one person with tweezers pulling the damn thing out, and that we are therefore trying to do her (and ourselves) a favor by poisoning it instead.

Exasperated with college applications, suddenly desperately unsure of myself in a situation that I was staring to feel ok about.

Possibly time for a walk in the sun and lovely weather, and then some time with the cats. The Fluffy Nutter should be ready to fall over and purr at somebody any time now, what with spending the whole day outside.

Everything will be all right, one way or the other.

So the grey cat we had to take to the shelter? The one we thought would surely be put to sleep?

He's outside. Yowling. And wearing a collar.

Ah well, at least now we have a phone number to call when he comes around.

Slept really well last night (Nine whole hours! Nine whole blissful, uninterrupted hours!). Had a lovely, lazy morning of reading and playing with the cats.
Then I went to two classes (sit here, take notes) and now I'm exhausted.

WHAT?! I do not understand how this can be. But sure enough, by the time art history was over, I was tired and irritable.

Ah well. Just a little more than a week now until break, and my teachers have opted not to take the makeup day, so I can rest and lounge about then.

And, y'know, start working on my two major papers for the semester.

Thriii loves to play with her jingly ball under my bed, because she has found that if she maneuvers the ball over to the lamp next to my side of the bed, I will lean over, pick it up, hilariously almost fall off the bed, and then throw the ball down the stairs. Then she gets to chase it down, pick it up, bring it back upstairs, and do it all over again.

For some reason, I always put my Into to Comp homework off until late at night. Possibly because I find it so irritating. This week: How To Use Excel. I may die of boredom before the night is out.

In other news, stranger cat gone. Gatto came by to check and make sure I hadn't let it in and fed it (since this is how he got to be one of our cats, I suppose it is a reasonable suspicion on his part), and after about an hour of waiting around to make sure it was really gone, Luna came in. Feeling much better now. It is very important to have the proper balance of cats.
all_strange_wonders: (buggre alle this)
Nighttime alone in the house may be the worst. It's the loneliness and the darkness--it's easy to not realize how bright and comfortable other people make the evening, even when you're doing homework and they're downstairs watching tv.

And Luna won't come in, because there is yet another damn stranger cat wandering around and praying the deck.

Slept badly (thank you: playful cats, sick father, own stupid brain). Grey cat has to go to the APS--nobody has room for him. We caught him this morning and my father is leaving now.

He'll be put to sleep. He's old, he's grumpy, nobody is going to want to adopt him. I hate that we can't help him, and that all the rescues and cat refuges are full, because all he really wants is somewhere warm to sleep and somebody to feed him.

Not shaping up to be a good day here, is what I'm saying.

My big, bad, opossum-treeing cat has become our kitten's favorite toy. It is hilarious to watch one cat with a ridiculous tail jumping all over another cat with a different but equally ridiculous tail--much more fun than watching poor Gatto run away from her. Luna doesn't run away, most of the time, even when she's irritated.

Also, watching Luna and Thriii both try to chase Luna's tail at the same time is… beyond words. My parents and I were rendered speechless with laughter for several minutes last night while this happened WHILE THE CATS WERE ON THE MANTLE.

It is bad to be a student who has left arguably the most important part of a major project to the last minute, especially when "the last minute" is Monday night and you've already had 2 hours of choral rehearsal and had to clean up cat vomit as soon as you got home.

It is going to be a long, long night, and I haven't been getting enough sleep recently as it is.

I will be so glad when this semester is over. I've pretty much even lost the energy to write by the time everything is done with in a day, and two choir rehearsals and a sunday service is getting to be Too Much on top of school. The natural conclusion would be to drop the one I'm not paying for, but every time I miss even one rehearsal--nevermind a sunday--Larry freaks out and my mom comes home saying everyone was asking her why I wasn't there. It would be really nice if we had another young, able soprano so that they didn't lean on me so much to fill that role.

But we don't.

And the end is not yet nigh, unless we're talking about the end of my sanity. That's so close I can almost touch it.
all_strange_wonders: An illustration of Nita from the Young Wizards story "Uptown Local". (Default)
Apparently word has spread that we're an awesome house for cats. Now there's a great big fluffy grey cat lounging around on the deck and demanding to be let it and fed every time someone opens the door.
Unusually for our house, we're hoping he'll go away and both someone else. We've already got three cats, after all. And Gatto and Luna BOTH hated this one on sight. Even Thriii keeps trying to smack him through the door when he comes up.

Ugh. What a day. Just got back from two hours at the emergency vet with Thriii because… well, it's a long, gross story involving me and cleaning up a lot of cat shit. She's fine. Let's leave it at that.
Anyway, because of that lovely little adventure this evening, I just got home, and I haven't had any dinner yet. And there's still more shit to clean up before I can take a shower and have dinner. In that order. With lots of soap. I'm not actually dirty, it's just one of my little quirks--I shudder to think what changing diapers will be like.

The good news is that my most recent BPAL order is shipping earlier than I expected. This has brightened my evening somewhat, although not as much as a dinner of scrambled eggs and a chocolate peppermintini (my mother bought this stuff. seriously.) while watching Gaudy Night for the 100,000th time will. After a long, hot, shower with lots and lots of soap. Did I mention lots of soap? And hot water?

And maybe a cup of tea to finish off the night.

Argh.

Well, tomorrow I'll go to the farmer's market and buy lovely beeswax candles and honey. And probably blueberry bread and chocolates from Dolly Mama, if we're going for honesty here.

Spent after-work portion of evening being swarmed by adorable kittens, am ridiculously blissful. All now right with world.

Tonight when I got Luna in she had so many burrs in her belly fur that I just had to turn her upside down and use a slicker brush to get the worst of them out. Needless to say, she wasn't terribly pleased about the whole exercise. Before she squirmed away, however, I managed to brush out a good twenty or so burrs, which makes 20-odd burrs I won't be seeing all over my pillow tomorrow after her mid-morning nap.

Also, I need some better mechanism for storing yarn and projects. Whenever I look for something in the bag I use right now, it causes an explosion. And I still can't find my #8 dpns.

Luna has this thing she does where she goes around complaining about everything EXCEPT the thing she wants- generally for me to pick me up and put her in my lap for some petting.
I fear this may parallel my own behavior in a rather unfortunate way.

Well, I have spent an absolutely lovely afternoon lazing with my Luna, who saw fit to fall absolutely asleep on my chest for the last hour or so.

Honesty time:
I leave the IAR KittenCam on all the time now. It's better than tv.
